There are lots of inconveniences that come with living on a ship, but for those of us who do decide to take the plunge, these inconveniences will soon be forgotten when you experience the rewards and fulfillment of a career with Steiner.

The cabins are very smalland all our staff excluding management, medi-spa physicians and acupuncturists have to share their cabin with one other staff member. Your cabin probably won’t have a window – so make sure you have your alarm clock to wake you up! Cabins are generally equipped with a bunk bed, telephone, television, wardrobe closet, dresser, and private shower and bathroom facilities. It has everything you need but is very small. You can personalize your room by hanging up pictures and posters.

While it’s easy to get romancedby the idea of travel, a good portion of your life at sea will be spent at work, so it is vital that it is both productive and fulfilling for you.

All our successful spas have great team players who support each other, but also take it upon themselves to run their own columns. What does this mean? It means that each individual will help promote the spa as a whole but will take responsibility for filling up his or her appointment sheet. There is nothing quite as invigorating and rewarding as being fully booked, and when you are working, you should try to be as busy as possible. Your salary is mostly commission and tip based, so the more productive you are, the more you can earn. Obviously how busy you are is not solely about how well you promote yourself, other factors also come into play – like how full the ship is, or where the ship is sailing – but it is vital that you take charge of your day and become the captain of your column! Your work will be varied and include: hosting seminars and demonstrations, promoting the entire spa and your own services, promoting in different parts of the ship, offering deck massage and pool side braiding, weekly port cleaning, inventory checks and assisting with stock. All staff must participate in life boat drill every cruise and guide passengers to their stations should there be an emergency. Staff may also be asked to be models for the gift shop fashion show. Work or Play? Onboard they become intertwined.

Every cruise line has different rules, but mostly our staff are allowed to go out in passenger areas. There may be some areas that are out of bounds and exclusive to passengers – but for the most part, staff can visit any of the passenger lounges, watch the most amazing Broadway shows in the theatres and more as long as they adhere to the dress code. This may be a simple rule like: staff must wear black, or it may be an actual evening uniform. However, in passenger areas, you must always be discreet.

But don’t despair! For those nights that you really want to let your hair down, there is always the crew bar where crew, staff and officers often meet to just relax, have a game of darts, dance or have a party. Most ships, especially the larger ones, have a crew sun bathing deck with a pool, as staff cannot use the passenger pool area. This private deck is found at the front of the ship and can offer a wonderful escape during your lunch break. On some smaller ships, staff can use the passenger pool on port days.

There is the crew dining room, and most ships allow the staff to eat on the Lido deck café which is a buffet filled with gorgeous healthy and not so healthy foods. This café is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. As this is a passenger area, during high traffic times, staff will not be permitted to eat here – so some ships have rules that do not allow staff to eat here before a specific time. The food is plentiful and Steiner pays for your room and board – so it is unlimited.

If the dining room buffet is too tempting for you, rest assured that most ships have a specialty restaurant that is available to the staff at additional cost. The speciality restaurants are very small and intimate and definitely worth it for a night out once in a while. As this is a passenger restaurant, obviously your reservation confirmation for seating is based upon passenger demand. On some smaller ships, staff always eat in the passenger dining room.

Imagine this.Never having to make your bed all contract long! Yes – your cabin may come with a cabin steward who makes your bed and takes your laundry every day. Each staff member is required to tip the cabin steward which works out to be roughly $10 per cruise, although standards differ. Your uniforms are normally laundered free of charge and personal clothes can be washed by the ship’s laundry for a small fee. Your cabin steward will take these for you and normally return them the next day. There is normally a nominal fee for this service, but on some ships it is complimentary. If you prefer to do your own washing and ironing, there is a crew self-service laundry area.

Communication with family and friends is easy.On most ships, you can call home from the comfort of your cabin. Costs vary – but they are very reasonable. You can also email if you subscribe to the onboard wireless network, and if you keep your mobile phone, you can use that when the ship is in port and when the ship is not too far out to sea. Other than that, you can buy phone cards to call from the ports.

It all depends on the itinerary, passenger count and how well you promote yourself. Commercial ships that sail from Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Orlando to the Caribbean on 3, 4 or 7 day itineraries are traditionally very busy for the spa and on sea days you can expect back-to-back appointments. On these ships, most staff earn more money at sea than they would earn on land, and they don’t have any living costs whatsoever. Tips are standard in the USA and most staff can live on their tips alone when doing well. If you are on ships that sail to exotic lands – or to faraway places, like the Norwegian Fjords or around the world, then the spa tends to be less busy and the salaries are not always as lucrative. Some of our staff save enough money to put a down payment on a house, and of course, some of our staff don’t do as well. It is very much up to you and your drive to succeed. However, on all ships you have absolutely no living costs onboard, so every penny is yours to spend as you wish. The fact is, you can live free of charge onboard, so if you want to save every penny, you can. Realistically, you probably won’t!

Each staff member receives a Visa backed Ocean Pay account. Your salary is automatically credited to this account. You will receive an Ocean Pay debit card and with this you can withdraw your money from an ATM machine or pay for anything in venues that accept credit or debit cards. If you wish to wire money into your savings account, you can do this online by visiting the Ocean Pay website. Your only true expenses are tips for the cabin steward (approximately $10 per week) and laundry. Other than that, your expenses are your choice – phone calls, wireless internet, gift shop purchases and bar bills.
