Chinese traditional massage is a popular therapeutic modality in Chinese medicine, and this massage technique is based upon the theories of acupuncture points and meridian. Although this massage method has been used for hundred years for therapeutic and healthy purpose, it has not been well evident whether there are benefits of Chinese traditional massage on post-exercise recovery. To investigate the effectiveness of traditional Chinese massage on exercise performance and muscle damaging status afteran acute bout of jumping exercise. Seventeen healthy male subjects (21.2 ± 0.3 yrs) participated in this study and were randomly divided into two groups (active recovery group, AR, n=8; Chinese traditional massage group, CMSG, n=9). All subjects performed a single bout of depth squat jump exercise (10 jumps/set; 12 set for total; set interval: 1 min). After the completion of exercise, AR group were subjected for active recovery on a stationary bike (50W for 12 min), and CMSG group were subjected for a 12-min Chinese traditional massage. The vertical jump performance, maximum isometric strength, and blood CK levels were measured at before exercise, after exercise, after massage, and 48h after exercise. The statistical comparisons for all measured parameters were used two-way ANOVA with repeated measurement. Both groups showed significantly greater blood CK levels at 48 h post-exercise (AR: 368.5±38.2 u/g; CMSG: 369.2±58.2 u/g) in compared with baseline, immediately after exercise, and after massage, whereas there were no statistical significance between-groups (p>0.05). The maximum isometric muscle strength (MVC) and vertical jump performance at different times were not different at any time point between groups (p>0.05). In conclusion, we observed that performing Chinese traditional massage immediately after acute strenuous exercise has no effects on attenuating the declines in vertical jump performance and exercise-induced muscle damage during post-exercise recovery.
