UREX-Tohoku Project: The Journey Starts Here

Tohoku University’s UREX-Tohoku Project is an ambitious plan to establish a world-class research ecosystem by empowering early and mid-career researchers attracting global talent. It is backed by substantial funding from the government’s Universities for International Research Excellence initiative.

As Japan’s first university selected for the initiative, Tohoku University will receive 15.4 billion JPY (approximately 100 million USD) this fiscal year, and some 10 billion JPY annually the next 25 years.

At the core of the UREX-Tohoku Project is the implementation of a comprehensive tenure-track system that will enable exceptional researchers to lead high-impact projects as Principal Investigators. This new flat and flexible research system comes with more freedom and independence for PIs to develop their own research.

"At Tohoku University, researchers can have freedom to explore new ideas, and we will encourage collaboration that can help create new research fields," explains Executive Vice President for Research, Asako Sugimoto. "Nothing is impossible, every idea has a chance of developing into something real. And whatever your background is, whatever your gender or nationality, as long as you have an idea and you join our community, we will help you achieve your goal."

To attract top-tier global talent, Tohoku University is offering:

  • Compensation packages on par with or better than researchers' countries of origin
  • Generous start-up funding and basic research support
  • Financial resources for hiring assistants and technical support staff
  • A dedicated spouse and partner programme to welcome researchers' families
  • An International Support Centre to facilitate adjustment to life in Japan
  • Researchers interested in being part of the UREX-Tohoku Project should have a look at the list of open positions or contact the Tohoku University Human Capital Management (HCM) Office for more information.
