Focus collections

Below is a list of all the open and closed focus collections in Environmental Research Communications , with each collection serving to highlight the exciting work conducted in a high interest or rapidly emerging subject area. All contributions are completely free to read. The collections are built incrementally, with flexible submission deadlines, allowing accepted contributions to be added to the collection as soon as they are ready for publication and further additional articles appearing on an ongoing basis. Many of the collections below are still open for submissions, please see the webpages below for details, and contact the journal if you have any queries.

Focus on Climate Leadership
Guest Editors : Tao Ma, Xinlu Sun, Andrew Sudmant, Zhifu Mi

This special issue aims to explore how climate leadership is exercised across different scales and sectors, and how diverse actors can work together to accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Contributions from a wide range of disciplines-including economics, policy studies, engineering, management, and environmental sciences-are welcome.

Focus on for Environmental Challenges in Indigenous Communities: New Perspectives and Solutions
Guest Editors : Chunjiang An, Pethie Lyons, Shan Zhao, Arja Rautio, Baiyu Zhang

This special issue examines the role of Indigenous communities in addressing environmental challenges through traditional ecological knowledge and scientific approaches. By exploring climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and pollution mitigation, it highlights Indigenous leadership in sustainable resource management and ecosystem resilience. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, this collection aims to advance equitable, science-informed solutions that integrate Indigenous perspectives into environmental governance and sustainability efforts.

Focus issue on Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Renewable Energy Systems

Environmental Research Series' Focus on Our Plastic Planet: from Problems to Solutions

This collection aims to bring together research to provide a comprehensive view of the multifaceted environmental interactions with plastics. Focus on Energy Transitions, Climate Neutral Agenda and the Protectionism Outbreak

Focus on Atmospheric Organic Compounds

We invite researchers and scientists to contribute to a special issue dedicated to advancing our understanding of atmospheric organic compounds. This interdisciplinary collection aims to explore the diverse facets of tropospheric organics, spanning local, regional, and global scales. We welcome submissions that employ various research methodologies, including theoretical studies, laboratory experiments, field measurements, modeling studies, satellite observations, and measurement technique developments. This special issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge and emerging trends in the dynamic field of atmospheric organic compounds.

Focus on Cities and Climate Change

This focus collection aims to explore the multifaceted relationship between smart cities and climate change adaptation and mitigation. The focus of this special issue is on public participation practices organised by responsible parties (e.g., elected officials, government agencies, other public- and private-sector organisations) to deliberately engage the public in decision-making on climate policies.

Focus on Advances in Atmospheric Physics and Environment

This Research Topic calls for papers that can improve our understanding of the characteristics of meteorology, climate and environment under current global changes by using observations, satellite remote sensing and numerical models. Focus on Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is known as "Asian water tower", and itprovides water resources for large populations in many important major river basins in Asia. Climate change has been increasingly impacting the hydrological cycle in the QTP by altering atmosphere conditions, cryosphere components and landscapes. Focusing on understanding the effect of climate change on hydrological processes and water resources in the QTP, this Special Issue prepares to publish state-of-the-art research articles or review papers that detect changes in climate, cryosphere and hydrological elements on different spatial and temporal scales, revealing the causes for the water resources changes, and proposing prediction methods for hydrological elements under climate changes in the QTP.

Focus on Natural Hazards, Disasters, and Extreme Events

Focus on the Future of Water-limited Agricultural Landscapes

This collection explores the human and ecosystem level implications of land use transitions in production landscapes, including the tradeoffs associated with alternative land uses and land abandonment, impacts on food production, environment, and society, scenarios for feasibility, and considerations for planning and implementation of multi-benefit landscapes in the face of water scarcity.

Focus on Reactive Nitrogen and Atmosphere-Biosphere Interactions
