5.0 out of 5 stars A link between Mississippi's Jimmie Rodgers and California's Merle Haggard, smooth Texas crooner William Orville ("Lefty") Frizzell made #1 with both sides of his 1950 debut: "If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time" (featuring Madge Suttee's rinky-tinky piano) and "I Love You A Thousand Ways." 1951 brought four simultaneous top-tenners: "I Want To Be With You Always," sappy "Mom And Dad's Waltz," laid-back "Always Late (With Your Kisses)" and a cover of Rodgers' 1931 "Travellin' Blues." But after '54, he only cracked the Top 10 twice: with `59's eerie "The Long Black Veil" (a future cover for The Band, The Chieftains and others) and `63's "Saginaw Michigan" with its final comic twist.

Raven's nicely remastered and annotated 28-song That's The Way Life Goes has nothing Frizzell aficionados don't already have on Varese Sarabande's That's The Way Love Goes collection that covers `70s ABC tracks or Columbia/Legacy's 1950-65 two-CD Look What Thoughts Will Do. Still, it's a fine introduction to a singer who explained, "I wanted to hold one word through a whole line of melody, to linger with it all the way down. I didn't want to let go of that no more than I wanted to let go of the woman I loved."

ジミー・ロジャースのヨーデルやハンク・ウィリアムズの情感溢れるホンキー・トンクが殆ど本人だけのものだったのに対して、レフティ・フリーゼルのいわゆる鼻にかかったようで情感は控えめな歌唱法は、後のカントリー歌手に絶大な影響を与えました。そんな彼の1950年から53年の全盛期のヒット曲を中心に、50年代後半や60年代のヒット、そして晩年の曲も含めたベスト盤です。仕事が終わって夜の盛り場に繰り出す自分を歌った陽気な側面と、喧噪に囲まれながらも愛に飢えている自分を切々と歌う側面の両方を表現した彼の自作曲は、まさにホンキー・トンクな世界観を見せてくれます。彼が作曲していない曲も晩年の曲もなかなかのものです（Long Black Veil はザ・バンドがカバーしています）。歌詞の内容がどうしても重視されるカントリーでは、歌詞を聞き取れなかったりどこかで探し出したりしなければ、興味の無い人には同じように聞こえてしまうかもしれません。それでも、ブルースやフォークとの境目があやふやな50年代初期の曲は、ジャンル分けが顕著な現代とは別の意味で味わい深いものです。

5.0 out of 5 stars Lefty Frizzell was a contemporary of Hank Williams, and his distinctive vocal style strongly influenced a number of latter-day stars including Merle Haggard, Keith Whitley and Dwight Yoakam amongst many others. This album contains 26 Billboard chart hits for Lefty between 1950 and 1975, and 2 others that didn't hit; 'Just Can't Live That Fast (Any More)', which I believe was a single release c/w 'Waltz Of The Angels', and 'That's The Way Love Goes', a subsequent number one for Johnny Rodriguez in February 1974, and for Merle Haggard exactly ten years later. Lefty's first record and hit 'If You've Got The Money I've Got The Time' topped the charts in 1950 when he was just 22. His last chart entry was 'Falling' just a short time before he died of a stroke in July 1975, aged just 47. It is interesting to note how Lefty's voice mellowed over the course of his career, and how recording techniques developed over that period. One of my own favourites 'Life's Like Poetry' is included here. A handsome 12-page booklet comes with this release, containing an interesting overview of Lefty's career, briefly chronicling his ups and downs. It would be very difficult to select a better collection than this to represent Lefty's music from his 250 or so commercially-released recordings, and personally I would not change a single one. This is a wonderful one-disc tribute to the music of one of country music's truly great stars.
