I'm looking for an acoustic for use at small church gatherings. Anyone played the Takamine D20N or D50N before? How's the sound and playability ? The RRP is $350. Is this the best guitar to get at this price range?
Usually what is the best discount that can be knocked off the RRP at music shops?

Are you wanting to mic up or plug in?
Takamine hold an ok reputation for being plugged in, but they generally sound quite flat and a bit uninspiring unplugged.
I own an all rosewood dreadnought which I can't remember the model number of, and it's ok plugged in, and ok unplugged, but like I said is a bit flat and dark. Playability wise it was absolutely horrible, my dad bought it so I blame him. Got the bridge lowered on it and it's all good now, but totally unnecessary costwise so pick one that is setup well.
Have you considered cort? I've head a pretty mint cort that cost 350ish, nice and clear and bright.
I highly recommend the Vintage V300 for that price point. Was voted best acoustic in guitar mag for under £1000.
Although i had to get mine setup first before it was actually playable :s
Now its a mint guitar :D

Ya talking about the Takamine or Vintage?
Oh, sorry, I meant the Takamine D20.

Is the vintage v300 around the $350 price point?
I followed up on the Cort and found these:
Cort Earth 60 package being offered by River Music for $379 http://rivermusic.com.au/index.php?page=product&id=71
and Cort Earth 70 for $279
http://www.skymusic.com.au/shop/Guitar- ... t-Earth-70
Cort Earth 100 for $319
http://www.skymusic.com.au/shop/Guitar- ... -Earth-100
Are these Cort Earth guitars good? The Cort Earth 70 is a solid spruce and is cheaper than the Takamine D20N which is a laminate. Wonder why Australians are able to sell guitars cheaper than New Zealand shops suchs as Rockshop.

Hey there,
It's Matt here from Rockshop. I just posted an email reply to the quesiton you sent via our Rockshop website. THe NZ RRP of this guitar is actually $339, whereas the prices you quote above are Aussie prices. So in actual fact, we are a little bit cheaper (at an exchange of $0.80)
We try to be very competitive with our pricing and you will find that a lot of our products are at the cheapest prices in the world. In particular, our Takamine pricing is certianly amongst the cheapest on the planet.
The reason our laminate-top Takamines are more expensive than the solid top CORT Earth 70 is that they are simply a better-built guitar. Now I am not knocking CORT here - they make some fantastic instruments indeed. However, their lower-end EARTH guitars are a fairly average guitar in the grand scheme of things (solid top or not). The Takamine D20/D21 are built and finsihed impeccably.
However on the other hand, if a solid-top is a must for you , then you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal than the Cort Earth 70....

We have actually just recently been appointed as VInatge dealers. FIrst shipment due to turn up any day now.
We will be running a limited range to start off with and will slowly grow it. We are starting with mid-priced Electrics, Acoustics and Basses - not a lot in the low end to start off with.
Watch this space.....

That's a company in Singapore ... once you add freight and convert ... hmmmm ... not so cheap. They're also only allowed to sell to Singapore customers.
Matt's right - from all the price challenges I do - our Takamine pricing is ridiculously good.
