This research, divided by six chapters, mainly explores the formation of despotic education in the years between Duke Hsiao of Ch’in and the Second Emperor of the Ch’in Dynasty (Hu Hai).
Chapter one explains the researcher’s attempt and the goals of research. The scope of the research and the research methodologies are explained. Some technical terminologies are defined and the relevant literature broadly reviewed.
Chapter two illustrates the feudal and educational system in the period of Western Chou. It is suggested that when the feudal system declined in the period of Eastern Chou, it subsequently made impact upon the educational institution and activities then. To understand this process is to understand how the State of Ch’in was established.
Chapter three illustrates Shang Yang’s persuasion of Duke Hsiao of Ch’in in terms of implementing new policy in the state of Ch’in. Shang Yang’s reforms paved the way to autocracy in the state of Ch’in, which made despotism and the thought of despotic education possible.
Chapter four, developing along the book of Han Fei Tzu, explains the foundation and purpose of the educational thought of despotism. Han Fei adopted and transformed Shang Yang’s political and educational ideas into plausible measures, which finally made an impact on the educational policy of the Ch’in dynasty.
Chapter five illustrates the measures of despotic education and their effects in the Ch’in dynasty which include agriculture training, military training and civil servant recruitment.
Chapter six reviews the process of this research and suggests the possible future research topics.
