Yahoo just introduced Pipes, a visual programming language of sorts for manipulating and regurgitating
RSS
feeds. Ho hum you say? Nah, this thing has got great potential even if right now it’s got a small bag of tricks.
The top example pipe right now takes the New York Times’s news feed, analyzes it for keywords, then goes and fetches Flickr images that match the keywords.
It took me no time at all to knock together a pipe which aggregates comments from the Greenpeace Ocean Defenders Weblog, Yahoo News from Japan mentioning whales, and Ocean Defender comments from the Greenpeace Forum. The pipe doesn’t do much other than fetch each of the feeds and then sort the whole thing by date, but that’s functionality I can
USE
. Now I’ve got most of the stuff I and our Blogger Posse need to monitor on a daily basis on one page instead of scattered in a hundred places on four websites.
Here’s what the backend of pipes looks like, it’s drag-n-drop easy to create modules and link their output to one another.
Ok, that was the practical application. Now for the fun!
One of the modules is a Babelfish translator. While messing around with this, I realised you could link
TWO
babelfish translation modules together to take a feed from English to, say Greek, then back to English, with the predicatable mangled results.
But talk about weird science. I piped through the
RSS
feed from the Whitehouse of the Shrub’s latest speeches, and
DAMN
if they didn’t suddenly look much more natural. It was as if the pipe had simply removed the professional editing layer and brought the results back to that raw, unvarnished “clarificationing” that My President does soo well.
President Bush on aforesaid Monday, I am grateful for the chance these joyous and uplifting of testifying ceramics. It is inspiring see people of a lot of different ages, raises a lot of different countries their hands and ulcers an oath citizens of the United States of America become.
